ARTIST STATEMENT
Artistic expression extends to a time before there was written language and has helped document the lives of people throughout
history. Before there was the written word and even the spoken language, there were visual symbols of our thoughts. As art has been entwined in human history, so has it been interwoven into my existence.
The process of creating objects by hand has fascinated me since childhood. I can remember sitting outside, drawing the world
around me, inexplicable field trips to the art museum, making mud pies, and reading curiously about the artifacts from ancient
cultures. Other cherished memories from my youth were the times I spent spelunking with my family under my father's guidance. Art and its creative expression have helped me face both the triumphs and trials of my life.
When I work with clay, I am reminded of the hours spent inside the earth and the spiritual connection that I have with nature. Connection with nature is essential for my artwork, spirituality, and belief in Jesus. In a time when mass production has taken away the presence of humanity from objects, I understand that through art, I am connected back to the earliest moments of human existence. The objects I make result from contemplation, memories, and separation from our materialistic society. My art serves as my connection to our complex world and provides an outlet for expressing creativity and truth amid the expanding urban sprawl.
